Early math skills correlate to academic and professional success later in life. It seems to be more than procedural mastery, but conceptualizing and genuine interest. I hope to set the girls on a trajectory for early mathematical thinking that will later develop into an appreciation for math as well as aptitude that will give them confidence. I didn't like math when I was kid and that was likely due to a host of reasons! Whether it's solely a need for adequate support at school or in the home, access to quality education, or self perception we can only do our best as parents.

I've read a number of great articles, resources, and studies that I will use and link as I go in this blog. The plan is to spend 2 or 3 nights a week either working math sheets before dinner or math games like Chutes and Ladders after dinner. I'll include the worksheets I find for print in the blog and that will be linked to the calendar. For this coming week we're going to work on size differences. The girls are definitely learning their numbers and how to count, but grasping measurement is key and it's thought to help in developing reason and logic. Here are the worksheets we'll be using....and feel free to print. I've linked them to PDFs for you to download and print yourself.

You can find a host of worksheets on mathdiary.
